BUNDANOON WEEKEND, 16 & 17 May, 1998
Submitted by Kevin McBrearty

Whilst grey skies greeted the happy band of social club members and guests who assembled for the Bundanoon weekend, nothing could dampen their enthusiasm and praise for the excellent weekend which followed. From the magnificent morning tea served at Fitzroy Falls to the lashings of cream and jam with a Devonshire tea in Berrima, our intrepid travellers revelled in the delights of the Southern Highlands. The recent rains showed Fitzroy Falls at its best and the cooler, windless weather was ideal for comfortable walks in the Morton National Park.

After a relaxing social evening, some tired walkers (and runners) retired for Saturday night at the Bundanoon Hotel, a fascinating older style hotel which would have been a magnificent setting for an Agatha Christie mystery. Some hardier types managed to stay awake for the English FA Cup Final, but there was a full roll call at the sumptuous breakfast laid out the next morning. The programme continued in good spirits, but with dampening weather, to a Celtic Market at Sutton Forest which produced many excellent 'bargain buys' and onwards to Bowral and the Bradman Museum, where a very knowledgeable Scotsman (Alistair) conducted a fact-laden tour of the museum. This man certainly knew his Bradman and what an excellent job has been made of the museum.

The day was completed with an interesting stop at Berrima, which was made all the more interesting by a guided historical tour of the town that revealed details of its gaol and prisoner incidents, its buildings and its commercial development.

"Telfords" conveyed the group in the luxury of one of their new coaches and our driver "Ted" participated both as an attentive professional and as a friend. Heavy rain awaited the group as it disembarked at the University and there was little opportunity to bid farewells, but my wife Christine and I would like to thank everyone for their friendliness which made this a delightful weekend.
